cocoa berry cooler

Summer is upon us here in Northern Michigan, which means hot and humid weather. Not exactly my favorite! Lately I have been taking my exercise out of doors, I've been doing a lot of trail running, biking, and hiking. In fact, I've started training for an "unofficial" triathlon. It's been my goal to do a triathlon for the past couple of years but due to traveling I haven't been able to. This summer I have the time, but I've been unable to find a conveniently located competition and heading off to grad school is making me pale at any extra expenses. In light of these predicaments, I decided that I'd do a triathlon on my own! I'll be marking out the distances/route I will be taking after completing 8 weeks of training.

After a bout of outdoor physical activity, I come inside a hot and sweaty mess and am in desperate need of something to cool me down. Enter this cocoa berry cooler. It's literally the perfect post outdoor run or bike treat, it instantly revives me. What's even better is that it only requires 4 simple ingredients- unsweetened cocoa powder, frozen berries, an almond milk, and raw honey. You can use any frozen berry in this you like. Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, a mix- you name it! Look for raw honey at your local farmer's market, after you taste this stuff you won't go back to the regular stuff, plus there are a ton of extra benefits to using raw honey like reducing allergies and greater antimicrobial properties. There's really no need for exact measurements on these ingredients, I tend to add extra cocoa powder - adjust the amounts according to your preferences. Scroll down to get the recipe!

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 tbs of cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tbs of local raw honey
  • 4-5 frozen strawberries

Combine ingredients in blender and blend until smooth. Adjust ingredients to taste, serve immediately! Makes 1-2 servings.
