Pursue some path, however narrow and crooked, in which you can walk with love and reverence.
Henry David Thoreau
Hi there, this is Mel! Welcome to wholly nourished, your guide to a down-to-earth healthy lifestyle.
You might be wondering who I am and why I started this website. While wholly nourished is primarily about you and your journey to finding true health and well-being, it ultimately reflects my own path to understanding myself, mind-body-earth wellness, and discovering my passion for real food, sustainable living, and outdoor adventure.
My inspiration is rooted in my past.
I grew up in rural Northern Michigan in a modest home tucked in the woods. Beautiful Lake Michigan was less than 10 minutes away and I am fortunate to have had easy access to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Many of childhood memories include playing outdoors, hiking, camping, and visiting national parks. Physical activity and eating healthy was always prioritized in my family. Fast-food and process snacks were a rarity, but homemade baked goods were a staple in the home. A childhood spent with nature's gems at my finger tips and a mother and father who valued healthy living was certainly a gift, one that I have learned not to take for granted.
My parents are environmentalists & naturalists at heart and by education. My dad can name woody plants and native birds in a way that makes me slightly regretful that I didn't pay more attention on all those hikes we did together when he would point out different species along the way. My mom was a minimalist and zero-waste enthusiast before these terms even existed. Composting, reusing plastic bags, second-hand clothing were all normal things in my household. To be honest, in elementary school I was slightly embarrassed of my washed and rewashed plastic sandwich bags, hand-me-down clothes, and nerdy parents, but as I've grown older I've come to appreciate the environmental values my mother and father instilled in me at a young age.
A journey to understanding holistic health and well-being.
My upbringing laid the foundation for my passion for holisitic health and well-being. Beginning in high school, I took a personal interest in nutrition and exercise; yet, I struggled for several years to find a balance between diet, physical activity, and emotional well-being. This was a difficult phase of insecurity in my life. Eventually I came to the realization that my restrictive behaviors would not be beneficial to my well-being in the long-term, from that point my understanding of health and wellness began to expand. True health and wellness isn't restrictive, it isn't measured in pounds or how defined your muscles are. It’s about embracing how God uniquely created you, feeling alive and confident, and discovering what brings you joy and satisfaction in life. Furthermore, it extends beyond your individual self- it's about serving and loving the people around you and caring for the environment.
This past spring, I graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies, specializing in human health and behavior in the environment. My undergraduate program allowed me to take a wide variety of classes in public health, sustainable food systems, nature therapy, ecology, etc. - all of which addressed health and the environment from differing perspectives. I also had the privilege to conduct individual research on green exercise aka physical activity in natural environments for a senior honors thesis. I am currently spending my last summer as a "kid" at home in Northern Michigan before I move to Denver, Colorado where I will begin working on a Doctorate in Physical Therapy at Regis University. It is my hope that as a physical therapist, I can incorporate my childhood and undergraduate experiences into my practice to bring greater health, well-being, and vitality to my patients. All of these things have enriched my understanding of health and well-being, forming it into a multifaceted concept that incorporates physical, mental, spiritual, and environmental health.
The mission and vision of wholly nourished.
My dream for wholly nourished is for it to serve as a resource for those who desire to live a healthy, active, down-to-earth life. It is my goal to provide you with reliable information and practical advice as you begin or continue on in your journey of becoming wholly nourished. There are 3 guides included for your use on my site - real food, sustainable living, and outdoor adventure. These are by no means the only things that make up health and wellness, but they are the topics that I find most joy in experiencing and sharing with others.
